ZAROS VILLAGE
Our head offices, our water sources, our village
At a distance of 45 kilometers south of Heraklion, Crete, lies the village of Zaros, built in a lush green valley at the foothills of the Psiloritis mountain range.
It is a village with a long history, confirmed by the Minoan findings at Kourtes, the remains of the Roman aqueduct at the Sterna spring, from which ancient Gortyna was supplied with water, as well as by the Byzantine monasteries of the region.
The very name of the town itself reveals the existence of abundant running waters in the area, as the word Zaros derives from the combination of the words “za” and “rous”, meaning abundant flow.
Indeed, there are many springs around the village, such as the Sterna spring, located north of Zaros, from which the entire village is supplied with water through a complete municipal water network.
The most important spring is the Amati spring, from which ZARO’S Natural Mineral Water is bottled.
The waters of these springs are characterized by exceptional stability and, due to their origin from the mountain mass of Psiloritis, they are considered among the finest waters in the Balkans.
